In a year characterized by intense competition the key highlights were:
- Subscriber base grew by over 3 million to 13.36 million in the year with an overall increase in market penetration of 47%.
- Expanded network to over 1,800 base stations of which 301 were 3G.
- Acquired a 51% stake in One Communications Ltd. – a Wimax service provider – to provide fi xed and wireless data services to corporate, medium sized institutions and individual customers.
- M-PESA service has over 6 million registered users with Ksh. 52 billion person-to-person transfers at the end of the fi nancial year.
- The M-PESA service won several awards during the year including the “UN World Business & Development Award” and the “GSMA Global Mobile World Awards - Best Mobile Money Service” together with Vodafone.
- The Government of Kenya sold 10 billion ordinary shares of Safaricom at a par value of 5 cents (Ksh. 0.05) through an Initial Public Offering (IPO) comprising 25% of the issued ordinary Safaricom shares. This IPO was highly successful and subsequently won “the emerging markets deal of the year” from Institutional Investor; the most highly regarded international awards body.
